The workflow engine is a set of Windows services which is in charge of executing the workflows according to the process models in which they are based. The engine makes the workflows advance from one step to another, executing each step according to the model process specifications and sending messages to the users with notifications, questions, alerts and reminders.

The workflow engine implementation follows a services oriented architecture (SOA) and has been designed with the goal of taking full advantage of available hardware power, using the capacity it needs without wasting resources that other applications may require.
